Prunus persica 'rubira' is a self-fertile peach variety, native to China. Very resistant to cold, it can withstand temperatures down to -35 deg C. Used as an ornamental tree with its deep red leaves, and masses of flowers in early spring.
In its own right it produces small fruits very dark red almost purple from July onwards. However the furry skin needs to be peeled off, as it can be bitter. The flesh is tasty.
This is used as a rootstock for peach and nectarines. Can grow between 2 to 4m with a slightly less spread. Has to be protected against peach leaf curl.
