The Filippa apple is a Danish variety, first cultivated around 1880 on the Island of Funen by seeds from the kernel of a wild apple. The cultivation was performed by Filippa Johannsen, daughter of a schoolmaster in the village of Hundstrup on South Funen. Filippa is a first class cooking apple as well as a good eating apple.

Filippa is a very hardy and easily cultivated variety of apple. The tree should be sheltered from the wind and the fruits are picked before it is quite ripe, since the fruits fall off very easily. The colour of the apples can vary from very pale yellow to bright yellow with a  carmine red hue, depending on how much the tree has been subjected to sunshine.

The flesh is yellow/white, juicy and with a suitable, fresh acidity and a pleasant aroma. The perfume is sweet and subtle, and very pleasant. Harvest season usually starts from late September to beginning of October. The apples are durable and can be stored until at least February to March.

Questions (FAQs)
Do you have a printed catalogue?

No - We have thought about it, but not at the moment, as they way too expensive and somebody has to pay for it down the line. All of our stock can be viewed and purchased from our website which displays live ‘available’ quantities.

Can fruit trees be grown in containers?

Yes - All fruit trees can be grown in pots as long as they are large enough. As far as the type of container, clay pots are heavy and stable. Plastic is durable, light and easier to manage, but they have a very short life, till they start cracking. For most fruit, choose pots 50-60cm in diameter. Pots are ideal for dwarfing rootstocks, but any semi dwarfing rootstocks will need potting up to a larger container or planting out into the ground.

Do you grow Espalier or Fan trained fruit trees?

No – We do not grow Espalier or Fan trained fruit trees. As they are very easy to train yourself.

Am I able to turn up and select my own fruit tree?

No - Sorry we are not a Garden Centre or retail Nursery. Orders can be placed via our website and the collection option can be selected at the checkout. Your order will then be ready for you to collect during our normal opening hours which are Monday-Friday 07.30-16.00. Our plants are grown in fields that are 3 miles away from our office. Yes – There is a product called ‘donation’ which enables you donate.

Which is best, bare-root or potted trees?

Yes and No - Each has its own advantages:

A pot grown tree can be planted at any time of the year. They should start to fruit the following summer after planting. A Bare Root tree is grown in a field and can only be lifted and sent out during the winter months when dormant. They should not be allowed to fruit the first summer after planting.

    What is a rootstock?

A rootstock is the portion of the tree that grows in the ground. Attached to it is the scion. It is the rootstock that determines the ultimate height that the tree will grow into, and also its suitability to soil conditions. The scion is the actual known variety being grown. This is an identical copy of its original mother tree.
